Thabo Mbeki is a South African politician who served as the second President of South Africa from 1999 to 2008. He was the first post-apartheid president to be elected in a fully representative democratic election. Mbeki was born in Idutywa, Eastern Cape, on 18 June 1942. He is the son of Epainette and Govan Mbeki, a prominent anti-apartheid activist. He attended primary school in Idutywa and secondary school in Umtata. He then went on to study at the University of Fort Hare, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1964. Mbeki has been involved in politics since the 1960s, when he joined the African National Congress (ANC). He was a member of the ANC's National Executive Committee from 1987 to 1997, and served as the Deputy President of the ANC from 1994 to 1997. He was elected President of South Africa in 1999, and served two terms until 2008. Mbeki is widely credited with helping to bring about the end of apartheid and the transition to a democratic South Africa. He has also been praised for his efforts to promote economic growth and development in the country. Mbeki is married to Zanele Mbeki, and they have two children. He is currently 79 years old.
