Stanley Kramer was an American film director, producer, and writer. He was best known for his socially conscious films, such as The Defiant Ones (1958), Inherit the Wind (1960), Judgment at Nuremberg (1961), and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967). He was nominated for nine Academy Awards, winning two for Best Picture for The Defiant Ones and Judgment at Nuremberg. Kramer was born in Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan, New York City, to Jewish immigrants from Austria-Hungary. He began his career as a production assistant in the 1930s, and eventually worked his way up to producer and director. He directed his first feature film, So This Is New York, in 1948. Kramer's films often dealt with controversial social issues, such as racism, nuclear war, and the death penalty. He was known for his willingness to tackle difficult topics, and for his ability to bring out the best in his actors. He was also known for his willingness to take risks, and for his ability to make films that were both entertaining and thought-provoking. Kramer died in 2001 at the age of 87. He was posthumously awarded the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award at the 2002 Academy Awards.
