Spike Jones was an American musician, bandleader, and comedian. He was best known for his zany and often irreverent musical parodies, which often featured sound effects and vocalizations. He was born in Long Beach, California, and began his career as a drummer in the 1930s. He formed his own band, The City Slickers, in 1940, and they became popular for their comedic performances. Jones was also a prolific composer, writing many of his own songs and arrangements. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1971. Spike Jones was married twice, first to singer Helen Grayco and then to singer Dorothy Collins. He had four children, two with Grayco and two with Collins. He died in 1965 at the age of 53.
