Shirley Bassey is a Welsh singer and actress who has been active in the music industry since the 1950s. She is best known for her powerful, emotive voice and her signature song, "Goldfinger". Bassey has released over 40 albums and has sold over 135 million records worldwide. She has been nominated for two Academy Awards and has won three Grammy Awards. Bassey was born in Tiger Bay, Cardiff, Wales, to Eliza Jane (née Start) and Henry Bassey. She began singing in local clubs and pubs at the age of 15. In 1953, she signed her first professional contract with Philips Records. She released her debut single, "Burn My Candle", in 1956. Bassey has released over 40 albums, including the critically acclaimed albums The Fabulous Shirley Bassey (1959), Shirley Bassey Sings the Hits (1962), and I Am What I Am (1984). She has also released several compilation albums, including The Shirley Bassey Singles Album (1975) and The Shirley Bassey Collection (1985). Bassey has been nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Original Song, for "Goldfinger" (1964) and "Moonraker" (1979). She has also won three Grammy Awards, for Best Pop Vocal Performance Female for "Big Spender" (1968), Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance for "The Performance of My Life" (1999), and Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album for The Performance of My Life (1999). Bassey is an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE). She was awarded the Freedom of the City of Cardiff in 1999.

Her mother was originally from Yorkshire, and her father was a Nigerian seaman who left the family when she was less than two. She later helped to support her family by working in an Enamelware factory. She made her professional debut at 16 appearing in a touring revue "Memories of Al Jolson". Her first major hit was "The Banana Boat Song," and she later sang "Goldfinger" in the James Bond movie Goldfinger (1964).

1963

Daughter Samantha was born in 1963. She drowned in 1985, after falling into the River Avon from The Clifton suspension bridge in Bristol. Bassey has always maintained that her daughter did not commit suicide.
