Shekhar Kapur is an Indian film director, producer, and actor. He is best known for his films such as Masoom (1983), Mr. India (1987), Bandit Queen (1994), Elizabeth (1998), and The Four Feathers (2002). He has won two National Film Awards, four Filmfare Awards, and a BAFTA Award. Kapur was born in Lahore, Punjab, British India, to Kulbhushan Kapur, a doctor, and Sheela Kanta Kapur, a writer. He studied economics at St. Stephen's College, Delhi, and later attended the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. Kapur began his career as an actor in the 1970s, appearing in films such as Jaan Hazir Hai (1975) and Hum Paanch (1980). He made his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed Masoom (1983). He went on to direct several successful films, including Mr. India (1987), Bandit Queen (1994), Elizabeth (1998), and The Four Feathers (2002). Kapur has won two National Film Awards, four Filmfare Awards, and a BAFTA Award. He was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian honor, in 2000. He is currently the chairman of the Indian Film and Television Directors' Association.
