Shammi Kapoor was an Indian film actor and director. He was born on 21 October 1931 in Bombay, British India. He was the second son of Prithviraj Kapoor, the legendary actor of the Hindi film industry. He was the younger brother of Raj Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor. Shammi Kapoor made his debut in the film industry in 1953 with the film Jeevan Jyoti. He went on to act in over 100 films in his career. He was known for his energetic performances and his romantic roles. He was also known for his comic timing and his ability to make people laugh. Shammi Kapoor was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, in 2011. He was also awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. Shammi Kapoor died on 14 August 2011 at the age of 79. He was survived by his wife, Neela Devi, and their two sons, Aditya Raj Kapoor and Kanwaljeet Singh. His last film was the posthumously released Rockstar (2011), in which he appeared alongside his great-nephew Ranbir Kapoor. The last seven years of his life, he suffered from chronic renal failure and underwent dialysis three times a week. But it never dampened his warmhearted spirit, until the end he continued to share his joy for life.

Starred in the shelved film Pyaar Bhari Waadiyan (1992). The film was to be directed by Nazir Herekar. Starring Shammi Kapoor, Asha Parekh, Ajay Devgan, Masooma Herekar. Nazir was going to launch his daughter Masooma Herekar in the film. Masooma was also signed to act in her father's film Dhuan Hi Dhuan opposite Siddharth (Later replaced by Shahbaz Khan). But Pyar Bhari Waadiyan was shelved when Masooma ended her life with boyfriend Pravin D'Cunha. It was a death due to slashing of the wrist, at a hotel. Masooma did not want to become a actress and wanted to settle down. Nazir Herekar opposed the idea and wanted her to become a actress.

In 1969, Shammi married Neila Devi from the former royal family of Bhavanagar. Their families had long been friends and they first met when Neila was 9 and Shammi was 19. Neila later recalled that Shammi had pulled her pigtails while she was watching one of his plays from the backstage wings. Shammi's sister-in-law first suggested the match to him. Eventually, Shammi called Neila on the phone to propose. They spent hours talking, and were married the next day.

1968

"In 1965, while Shammi was filming Teesri Manzil (1966), his wife Geeta fell ill with smallpox and passed away. After months away from the set, Shammi eventually returned to film the song "Tumne Mujhe Dekha.

1961

By 1961, Shammi's boisterous shout of "Yahoo!" and his exuberant hip-shaking dance moves, in his first color picture Junglee (1961), had made him a star. His natural talent for dancing and his modern and casual fashion sense brought him comparisons to Elvis Presley, and Shammi became known as the "Rebel Star.

1959

Of all his heroines, he had the most onscreen chemistry with Asha Parekh, and they were paired romantically in four films. He was her first hero in Dil Deke Dekho (1959) for writer-director Nasir Hussain which became a hit and made her a star. Hussain brought them back together several years later for a film he wrote and produced titled Teesri Manzil (1966). Vijay Anand directed and edited the hit film, and after 50 years, it's still a favorite among moviegoers. Shammi and Asha were paired together romantically in two more films Jawan Muhabat (1971) and Pagla Kahin Ka (1970). Neither film became a box office hit, but the latter film was a favorite for both actors. In real life, they didn't have a romantic relationship, since he was married to Geeta Bali, who died suddenly during "Teesri Manzil". Even though, he was now a widower, he didn't pursue a romance with Asha, since she was involved with Hussain, so he started a relationship with Mumtaz. He affectionately called Asha bhatiji (niece), while she called him chacha (uncle). In her 2017 memoir "The Hit Girl", Asha wrote about how he played a prank on Mumtaz by telling her that he married Asha, but she eventually saw thru the prank and laughed it off. His relationship with Mumtaz didn't last, and he had an arranged marriage with Neela Devi. Asha kept in touch with both of them, until his death.

Four months later, Geeta agreed to marry Shammi and they wed in small ceremony witnessed by Hari Walia who produced and directed their next film together Coffee House (1957).

The film Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957) was a turning point in Shammi's career. For this film, he cut his hair and shaved off his pencil-thin mustache; creating a new look and persona. The film was a success and was soon followed by more hits.
