He is best known for his roles in films such as The Shining, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and Silver Streak. He also provided the voice of Hong Kong Phooey in the animated series of the same name. Crothers was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, on May 23, 1910. He began his career as a jazz musician, playing the saxophone and clarinet in various bands. He eventually moved to Los Angeles, where he began appearing in films and television shows. Crothers' first major role was in the 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, in which he played the role of Turkle. He went on to appear in a number of other films, including The Shining, Silver Streak, and The Toy. He also provided the voice of Hong Kong Phooey in the animated series of the same name.
