Ruth Gordon was an American actress, writer, and director. She began her career as a stage actress in the 1920s, and later transitioned to film and television. She is best known for her roles in the films Rosemary's Baby (1968) and Harold and Maude (1971). She won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the film.
Gordon was born on October 30, 1896 in Quincy, Massachusetts. She attended Quincy High School and later studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City.
Gordon began her career on the stage, appearing in plays such as The Royal Family and The Front Page. She made her film debut in the 1932 film The Old Dark House. She went on to appear in numerous films throughout her career, including The Diary of Anne Frank (1959), The Night of the Iguana (1964), and The Trouble with Angels (1966).
In 1968, Gordon won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Rosemary's Baby. She also received an Academy Award nomination for her performance in Harold and Maude.
Gordon was married to actor Garson Kanin from 1942 until his death in 1999. She died on August 28, 1985 in Los Angeles, California.

The next 20 years she spent on stage, even appearing at the Old Vic in London in the successful run of "The Country Wife" in 1936. Nearly 25 years after her film debut, she returned to movies briefly.
Twice married, she gave birth to her only child at age 32, to a son, Jones Harris on October 16, 1929. The child's father was Jed Harris, to whom she was not married. Her only grandchild was Jack Gwynne Emmet Harris (b. March 17, 1972).
When Ruth Gordon convinced her father, a sea captain, to let her pursue acting she came to New York and studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She acted in a few silents made at Fort Lee, New Jersey, in 1915. She made her Broadway debut in "Peter Pan" as Nibs the same year.
