He began his career in the early 1930s, working as a camera assistant on films such as The Public Enemy (1931) and Little Caesar (1931). Harlan was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on the film To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). He also worked on films such as The Big Sleep (1946), The Gunfighter (1950), The War of the Worlds (1953), and The Ten Commandments (1956). Harlan died on April 15, 1974 in Los Angeles, California. He was 70 years old.
