In 1983, collaborate with Arthur Miller on Beijing production of "Death of a Salesman." He translated the script, played lead role Willy Loman, and served as Miller's interpreter.

First made his mark in the West as a translator. He was one of the stars of the stage production of Lao-She's "Teahouse" in Beijing in 1958, revived after the Cultural Revolution in 1979. His perfect English enabled him to act as interpreter between the company and foreign visitors. This continued when the production toured Europe.
