Roy Acuff was an American country music singer, fiddler, and promoter, known as the "King of Country Music." He was one of the most influential and successful country music performers of the 20th century, and was one of the first country music superstars. Acuff began his career in the 1930s as a member of the "Foggy Mountain Boys" and went on to become a major star in the 1940s and 1950s. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1962. Acuff was born in Maynardville, Tennessee, and began playing the fiddle at an early age. He was a member of the "Foggy Mountain Boys" from 1934 to 1942, and then formed his own band, the "Smoky Mountain Boys." He released his first single, "The Great Speckled Bird," in 1936, and it became a major hit. Acuff went on to record a number of other hits, including "Wabash Cannonball," "The Wreck on the Highway," and "The Precious Jewel." Acuff was also a successful promoter and businessman. He founded the "Grand Ole Opry" in 1925, and was instrumental in the development of the "Country Music Association" in 1958. He was also a major influence on the development of the "Nashville Sound" in the 1950s and 1960s. Acuff died in 1992 at the age of 89. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1962, and was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1997.
