She has also appeared in films such as The Rose (1979), The Natural (1984), and The River (1984). Blakley was born in Nampa, Idaho, and raised in Los Angeles, California. She attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where she studied theater and music. She began her career as a singer-songwriter, performing in clubs in Los Angeles and New York City. In 1975, Blakley was cast in Robert Altman's Nashville, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She also appeared in Martin Scorsese's New York, New York (1977), The Rose (1979), The Natural (1984), and The River (1984). Her role is considered loosely based on that of country icon Loretta Lynn, a singer whose own success came at the cost of exhaustion, loneliness, injury, bitter rivalries, exploitation, fickle audiences, obsessed fans, and an overbearing husband-manager. Ronee performed several of her own songs as Barbara Jean, including "Dues" and "My Idaho Home". The film's score received a Grammy nomination.

1970

Working with Bob Dylann in the early 1970s, she appeared as "Mrs. Bob Dylan" in Dylan's film Renaldo and Clara (1978), which is set during the Rolling Thunder Revue tour of 1975. In the movie she performs the song "I Need a New Sun Rising". She also sang on Dylan's 1976 album "Desire".
