Ronald Biggs was an English criminal who was part of the Great Train Robbery of 1963. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in the robbery, but escaped from prison in 1965 and fled to Brazil. He lived in Brazil for 36 years before returning to the UK in 2001. He was released from prison in 2009 after serving 15 years. Biggs was born in Stockwell, London, and left school at the age of 15. He worked as a carpenter and a painter before joining the Royal Air Force in 1948. He was discharged from the RAF in 1950 and began a career as a petty criminal. In 1963, he was part of a gang of 15 men who robbed a Royal Mail train of £2.6 million. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison, but escaped from Wandsworth Prison in 1965. Biggs lived in Brazil for 36 years, during which time he married a Brazilian woman and had three children. He returned to the UK in 2001 and was arrested and sent to prison. He was released in 2009 after serving 15 years. Biggs died in 2013 at the age of 84. He was remembered as a folk hero by some, and as a criminal by others.
