Ron Asheton was an American musician, songwriter, and record producer. He was best known as the guitarist and co-songwriter of the influential proto-punk band The Stooges. He was also a member of the bands Destroy All Monsters, New Race, and Dark Carnival. Asheton was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He began playing guitar at the age of 13, and was influenced by blues and rock and roll. He formed The Stooges with his brother Scott and Iggy Pop in 1967. The band released three albums before disbanding in 1974. Asheton then formed the band Destroy All Monsters with his then-girlfriend Niagara and other musicians. The band released several albums and toured extensively in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In the late 1980s, Asheton formed the band New Race with his brother Scott and Iggy Pop. The band released one album before disbanding in 1991. Asheton then formed the band Dark Carnival with his brother Scott and other musicians. The band released one album before disbanding in 1995. Asheton died in 2009 at the age of 60. He was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010 as a member of The Stooges.
