He was the illegitimate son of a famous Russian actor of the silent era, Ivan Mosjoukine. His book, "Promise At Dawn", is an account of his childhood and early manhood, and of the influence of his lively Polish mother. It was the basis of a 1971 film directed by Jules Dassin, and three young actors played Gary at different ages - Didier Haudepin had the most screen time of the three.
