Donaldson was born on 15 November 1945 in Ballarat, Australia. He attended the University of Melbourne, where he studied film and television. After graduating, he moved to New Zealand and began working as a director and producer for television. Donaldson's first feature film was Sleeping Dogs (1977), which was the first feature film to be made in New Zealand. He then went on to direct The Bounty (1984), which was nominated for four Academy Awards. He has since directed a number of successful films, including Cocktail (1988), Thirteen Days (2000), The Bank Job (2008), and The World's Fastest Indian (2005).
