Roger Angell is an American essayist and non-fiction writer. He is best known for his writing on baseball, which has earned him numerous awards, including the J.G. Taylor Spink Award from the Baseball Writers' Association of America in 2011. He was born on September 19, 1920 in New York City, New York. Angell attended St. Bernard's School and graduated from Harvard University in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, and then worked as an editor at The New Yorker magazine from 1956 to 2012. Angell has written several books, including The Summer Game (1972), Five Seasons (1977), Late Innings (1982), and A Pitcher's Story (1991). He has also written numerous essays and articles for The New Yorker, Sports Illustrated, and other publications. Angell is the recipient of numerous awards, including the J.G. Taylor Spink Award from the Baseball Writers' Association of America in 2011, the National Magazine Award for Reporting in 1975, and the PEN/ESPN Lifetime Achievement Award for Literary Sports Writing in 2012.
