Robert Legato is an American visual effects supervisor and director. He is best known for his work on the films Titanic, Apollo 13, The Aviator, Hugo, and The Jungle Book. He has won three Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects for his work on Titanic, The Aviator, and Hugo. Legato was born on May 6, 1956 in Monmouth County, New Jersey. He attended the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Film Production. Legato began his career in the visual effects industry in the late 1970s, working on films such as Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Tron. He went on to work on a number of other films, including The Abyss, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Jurassic Park, and Forrest Gump. In 1997, Legato won his first Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for his work on Titanic. He won his second Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for his work on The Aviator in 2004, and his third Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for his work on Hugo in 2012. Legato has also directed a number of television episodes, including episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and Star Trek: Voyager.
