Robert Alton was an American choreographer, dancer, and director. He was born in Bennington, Vermont, and began his career as a dancer in the 1920s. He was a principal dancer with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo from 1932 to 1936, and then joined the Ballet Theatre (now American Ballet Theatre) in 1937. He choreographed for both companies, and also for the Broadway stage. Alton was known for his innovative and daring choreography, which often featured daring lifts and daring partnering. He was also known for his use of classical ballet technique in his choreography. He choreographed for such Broadway shows as Oklahoma!, Carousel, and Brigadoon. Alton was nominated for two Tony Awards for his choreography, and won the Tony Award for Best Choreography for Brigadoon in 1947. He also won the Donaldson Award for Best Choreography for Carousel in 1945. Alton died in New York City on April 28, 1957. He was 51 years old.
