Richard Briers is an English actor who has had a long and successful career in television, film, and theatre. He is best known for his roles in the BBC sitcoms The Good Life and Ever Decreasing Circles, and for his voice-over work in the animated series The Wind in the Willows. Briers was born in Merton, Surrey, England, on 14 January 1934. He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he studied acting and made his stage debut in 1956. He went on to appear in numerous stage productions, including the original production of the musical Half a Sixpence in 1963. Briers made his television debut in 1962, and went on to appear in a variety of television shows, including The Avengers, Doctor Who, and The Sweeney. He is best known for his roles in the BBC sitcoms The Good Life (1975-1978) and Ever Decreasing Circles (1984-1989). Briers has also appeared in a number of films, including The Return of the Pink Panther (1975), The Great Muppet Caper (1981), and The Madness of King George (1994). He has also provided voice-over work for the animated series The Wind in the Willows (1984-1990). Briers has been married to Ann Davies since 1960, and they have two children. He revealed in a newspaper interview in January 2013 that he had been diagnosed with emphysema in 2007 and had smoked approximately half a million cigarettes before quitting.
