Red Holloway is an American jazz saxophonist and flutist. He is best known for his work with organists such as Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, and Brother Jack McDuff. He has also worked with many other jazz greats, including Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, and Miles Davis. Holloway was born in Helena, Arkansas, and began playing saxophone at the age of 12. He attended the University of Arkansas, where he studied music and played in the school's jazz band. After graduating, he moved to Chicago, where he worked with many of the city's top jazz musicians. Holloway has released several albums as a leader, including Red Holloway and the Red Hot Horns (1962), Red Holloway Goes to College (1966), and Red Holloway and the Jazz Giants (1970). He has also appeared on numerous recordings as a sideman, including albums by Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, and Brother Jack McDuff. Holloway has been honored with several awards, including the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Fellowship in 2006. He is also a member of the Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame. Chicago tenor saxophonist, educated at DuSable High School and the Conservatory of Music. Army service from age 19, became bandmaster for Fifth Army band. Worked in Chicago (1950's to 60's) with top musicians, including Dexter Gordon, B.B.King, Billie Holiday, Chuck Berry and Ben Webster. Settled on the West Coast in the late 1960's. Worked with Sonny Stitt in the 1970's; also with big bands, including Juggernaut.
