Ray Walston was an American actor and comedian best known for his role as the alien in the 1960s television series My Favorite Martian. He also starred in the musicals Damn Yankees and South Pacific, and appeared in the films The Sting, Popeye, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Walston was nominated for four Emmy Awards and two Tony Awards during his career. Walston was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on November 2, 1914. He began his career as a stage actor, appearing in productions of The Front Page and The Little Foxes. He made his Broadway debut in 1938 in the musical Very Warm for May. Walston's film career began in the 1940s, with roles in films such as The Lady from Shanghai and The Seven Year Itch. He also appeared in the classic film The Sting, as well as Popeye and Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Walston was nominated for four Emmy Awards for his role as the alien in My Favorite Martian, and won a Tony Award for his performance in the musical Damn Yankees. He also received a Tony nomination for his role in South Pacific. Walston died on January 1, 2001, at the age of 86.
