Piero Messina is an Italian film director and screenwriter. He is best known for his feature film debut, The Wait (2015), which was selected for the Cannes Film Festival's Un Certain Regard section. Born on April 30, 1981 in Caltagirone, Italy, Messina studied at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome. He began his career as an assistant director on films such as The Best of Youth (2003) and The Consequences of Love (2004). In 2015, Messina wrote and directed his first feature film, The Wait, which was selected for the Cannes Film Festival's Un Certain Regard section. The film stars Juliette Binoche and Lou de Laâge as two women who are waiting for the return of a loved one. The film was well-received by critics and won several awards, including the Grand Prix at the Tokyo International Film Festival. In 2018, Messina directed the television series My Brilliant Friend, based on the novel of the same name by Elena Ferrante. The series was a critical and commercial success, and was nominated for several awards, including a Golden Globe. Messina is currently in pre-production on his next feature film, The True Story of the Nun of Monza.
