She was the daughter of William Worsley Ashcroft and Edith Margaret Emily (née Hill). Peggy Ashcroft began her career in the theatre, making her debut in 1925 in a production of The Constant Nymph. She went on to appear in numerous plays, including The Seagull, The Cherry Orchard, and The Importance of Being Earnest. She also appeared in several films, including A Passage to India (1984), The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981), and The Go-Between (1971). Peggy Ashcroft was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1976 and was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1982. She was also awarded the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Revival in 1984. Peggy Ashcroft died on 14 June 1991 in London, England, UK. She was 83 years old.
