Paul Lynde was an American comedian, actor, and television personality. He was best known for his role as Uncle Arthur on the television series Bewitched and as the center square on the game show Hollywood Squares. He was also known for his roles in the films Bye Bye Birdie and The Glass Bottom Boat. Lynde was born in Mount Vernon, Ohio, on June 13, 1926. He attended Northwestern University, where he studied drama and was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. After college, he moved to New York City and began performing in Broadway shows. Lynde made his film debut in Bye Bye Birdie in 1963. He went on to appear in several other films, including The Glass Bottom Boat, The Cat from Outer Space, and The Muppet Movie. He also appeared in numerous television shows, including The Munsters, The Monkees, and The Partridge Family. Lynde was a regular on the game show Hollywood Squares from 1968 to 1981. He was also a frequent guest on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Lynde died of a heart attack on January 11, 1982, at the age of 55. He was posthumously inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 2006.

Lynde got his inspiration to become an actor at the age of four or five after his mother took him to see the original silent film Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1925). After graduating from Northwestern University, Lynde relocated to New York City where his first break came from being a stand-up comedian at the Number One Fifth Avenue nightclub.
