Olivier Gascuel is a French researcher and professor of computer science at the University of Montpellier. He is best known for his work in bioinformatics, phylogenetics, and evolutionary biology. He was born in 1956 in France and obtained his PhD in computer science from the University of Montpellier in 1985. Gascuel has made significant contributions to the field of bioinformatics, including the development of the Neighbor-Joining algorithm for phylogenetic tree reconstruction, the development of the GTR+G model of nucleotide substitution, and the development of the BIONJ algorithm for computing the maximum likelihood tree. He has also developed several software packages for phylogenetic analysis, including Phylo_win, Phylip, and Phylo_win+. Gascuel has authored or co-authored over 200 scientific papers and several books, including the widely used textbook "Bioinformatics Algorithms: An Active Learning Approach". He is a member of the French Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the International Society for Computational Biology.
