Wood began her cycling career in 1998, when she won the Australian Junior Road Race Championship. She went on to compete in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, where she finished in the top 10 in the women's road race. In 2002, Wood won the Australian National Road Race Championship and the Oceania Road Race Championship. She also competed in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, where she finished in the top 20 in the women's road race. Wood has also competed in the UCI Women's Road World Cup, where she has won several stages and finished in the top 10 overall in the 2005 and 2006 seasons. Wood is currently a member of the Australian National Team and is a member of the Specialized-lululemon professional cycling team. Her greatest success as a road cyclist has arguably been in Australian tours, including the Australian Criterium, Bay Series Criterium and the Geelong Tour, with some success overseas, particularly winning Stages of the Giro d'Italia Femminile (ITA) and the Points Classification for the Giro d'Italia Femminile in 2004 and 2005. In the 2004 Summer Olympics Women's Road race she was in the leading group with fellow Australian Sara Carrigan, and when Carrigan and Judith Arndt broke away in the final lap to win the gold and silver medals, Wood had to sprint for the bronze medal with Olga Slyusareva of Russia and Nicole Cooke of Great Britain, coming 4th overall in the race. She was the 2008 Australian Open Road champion (in the Elite Women's Road Race event).
