Nino Rota was an Italian composer, pianist, and conductor. He is best known for his film scores, particularly for the films of Federico Fellini and Luchino Visconti. He wrote the music for classic films such as The Godfather, La Strada, 8½, and Romeo and Juliet. Rota was born in Milan, Italy, on 3 December 1911. He studied at the Milan Conservatory, where he graduated in 1929. He then went on to study composition with Ildebrando Pizzetti and conducting with Bernardino Molinari. Rota's career as a composer began in the 1930s, when he wrote music for radio plays and ballets. He also wrote music for the theater, including the opera La notte di un nevrastenico (1937). Rota's film career began in the 1940s, when he wrote the music for several films, including La Strada (1954) and 8½ (1963). He also wrote the music for the classic films The Godfather (1972) and Romeo and Juliet (1968). Rota was nominated for several Academy Awards, including for his work on The Godfather and Romeo and Juliet. He won an Academy Award for Best Original Score for The Godfather Part II (1974). Rota died in Rome on 10 April 1979. He was 67 years old.

In 1937, he began a teaching career that led to the directorship of the Bari Conservatory, a title he held from 1950 until his death in 1979.

1930

From 1930 to 1932, Nino Rota lived in the USA. He won a scholarship to the Curtis Institute of Philadelphia where he attended classes in composition taught by Rosario Scalero and classes in orchestra taught by Fritz Reiner. He returned to Italy and earned a degree in literature from the University of Milan.

1929

Then, still a child, he moved to Rome where he completed his studies at the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in 1929 with Alfredo Casella. In the meantime, he had become an 'enfant prodige', famous both as a composer and as an orchestra conductor.

1923

His first oratorio, "L'infanzia di San Giovanni Battista," was performed in Milan and Paris as early as 1923 and his lyrical comedy, "Il Principe Porcaro," was composed in 1926.
