He has also composed music for films, television, and theater. Alexander was born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1944. He began playing piano at the age of six and was soon performing in local clubs. He moved to the United States in 1961 and began performing with jazz greats such as Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, and Milt Jackson. Alexander has released over 70 albums, including his Grammy-nominated album, Monty Alexander Live at the Iridium. He has also composed music for films, television, and theater, including the score for the film The Mighty Quinn. Alexander has received numerous awards and honors, including the Order of Distinction from the Jamaican government in 2006. He is also a member of the American Jazz Hall of Fame.
