Michelangelo Antonioni was an Italian film director, screenwriter, editor, and short story writer. He is best known for his "trilogy on modernity and its discontents" — L'Avventura (1960), La Notte (1961), and L'Eclisse (1962). His films are noted for their stylistic complexity and their long takes. He won numerous awards, including the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, and the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. Antonioni was born in Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna, Italy, on 29 September 1912. He was the son of Elisabetta (née Roncaglia) and Umberto Antonioni, a wealthy landowner. He was educated at the University of Bologna, where he studied economics and commerce. Antonioni began his career as a film critic, writing for the Italian film magazine Cinema. He then moved into directing, making his first film, Story of a Love Affair, in 1950. He went on to direct a number of acclaimed films, including L'Avventura, La Notte, and L'Eclisse. He also wrote and directed the documentary film Chung Kuo – Cina (1972). Antonioni's later films, including The Passenger (1975) and Beyond the Clouds (1995), were less successful. He died in Rome on 30 July 2007, at the age of 94. At the time of his death, Antonioni's net worth was estimated to be around $20 million.
