He is best known for his work as a film critic for The Baltimore Sun and The New Yorker. Sragow attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. He then went on to earn a Master of Arts degree in English from the University of California, Berkeley. Sragow began his career as a film critic in the late 1970s, writing for The Baltimore Sun. He then moved to The New Yorker in the early 1990s, where he wrote reviews and features for the magazine. He has also written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Los Angeles Times. Sragow has written several books, including The Film Lover's Companion (1995), The Hollywood Reporter Book of Box Office Hits (1996), and The Hollywood Reporter Book of Box Office Bombs (1997).
