He has also worked on films such as The Abyss, The Blue Planet, and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. DeGruy was born in Mobile, Alabama, and grew up in the Gulf Coast region. He attended the University of South Alabama, where he studied marine biology and photography. After graduating, he worked as a commercial photographer and then as a cinematographer for the National Geographic Society. In the early 1980s, deGruy began working on documentaries for the BBC and National Geographic.
