Max Brand was born Frederick Schiller Faust on May 29, 1893 in Seattle, Washington. He was an American author best known for his western fiction. He wrote under the pen name Max Brand as well as other pseudonyms, including George Owen Baxter, David Manning, Peter Morland, George Challis, Frederick Frost, John Frederick, George Evans, and Nicholas Silver. Brand wrote over 500 novels and short stories, and his works have been adapted into films and television shows. He was a prolific writer, and his works are still popular today. Brand was born to a German-American family and grew up in California. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, but dropped out after two years. He then moved to New York City, where he worked as a journalist and wrote short stories. Brand enlisted in the United States Army in 1917 and served in World War I. After the war, he returned to writing and published his first novel, The Untamed, in 1919. He continued to write westerns and adventure stories, and his works were adapted into films and television shows. Brand died in 1944 at the age of 51. He was inducted into the Western Writers of America Hall of Fame in 1971.
