Maurice Blackburn was a Canadian lawyer and politician. He was born in Québec City, Québec, Canada, and was educated at the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School. He was called to the bar in 1937 and practiced law in Toronto. In 1940, Blackburn was elected to the House of Commons as a Liberal Member of Parliament for the riding of York South. He was re-elected in 1945 and 1949. During his time in Parliament, he served as the Minister of Labour and National Health and Welfare. In 1951, Blackburn left politics and returned to the practice of law. He founded the law firm of Maurice Blackburn & Co. in Toronto, which later became known as Maurice Blackburn & Associates. The firm specialized in labour and employment law, and was one of the first firms in Canada to focus on this area of law. Maurice Blackburn was a pioneer in the field of labour and employment law. He was a founding member of the Canadian Labour Law Association and served as its president from 1956 to 1958. He was also a founding member of the Canadian Bar Association's Labour Law Section and served as its president from 1959 to 1961. Maurice Blackburn passed away in Toronto on April 15, 1975. He was 61 years old.
