Cooper began his career as a reporter for The Washington Post in 1997. He then moved to Time magazine in 2000, where he served as White House correspondent and later as national security correspondent. In 2004, he was part of the team that won the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting for their coverage of the Valerie Plame affair.
Cooper is the author of several books, including The War on Leakers: National Security and American Democracy, from Eugene V. Debs to Edward Snowden (2016) and The Natural: The Misunderstood Presidency of Bill Clinton (2002).
Cooper is married to Mandy Grunwald, a political consultant and former Clinton White House aide. They have two children.

In 2018, Cooper resigned from his senior writer position at Newsweek after two top editors were fired for investigating their parent company's potential illegal dealings. In his resignation letter, Cooper cited the company's dwindling standards and “reckless leadership” following several scandals both editorial and organizational.
Matthew Cooper attended Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey, followed by Columbia University. He has been divorced since 2009 from Hillary Clinton's media consultant Mandy Grunwald, whom he married in 1997 and separated from in 2007. They have a son, Benjamin, born in 1998.

He worked for the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission on a book about the group's findings from the economic collapse in 2010.
