Mary Jo Salter is an American poet, editor, and literary critic. She was born on August 15, 1954 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She attended Harvard University, where she earned her B.A. in 1976 and her M.A. in 1977. She then went on to earn her Ph.D. in English and American Literature from Harvard in 1983. Salter is the author of eight collections of poetry, including A Kiss in Space (1999), which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, and Open Shutters (2003), which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. She has also edited several anthologies, including The Norton Anthology of Poetry (2005). Salter has taught at Mount Holyoke College, Harvard University, and Johns Hopkins University. She is currently a professor of English at the University of Pittsburgh. Salter has received numerous awards and honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Writers' Award, and a MacArthur Fellowship.
