Mary Astor was born on May 3, 1906 in Quincy, Illinois. She was an American actress who achieved fame during the silent and early sound film eras. She was best known for her role as Brigid O'Shaughnessy in The Maltese Falcon (1941). She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in The Great Lie (1941).
Astor began her career as a child actress in silent films. She appeared in over 50 films between 1915 and 1934, including The Little American (1917), The Great Gatsby (1926), and Red Dust (1932). She was also a successful stage actress, appearing in Broadway productions such as The Bat (1920) and The Animal Kingdom (1932).
Astor was married four times and had two children. She died on September 25, 1987 in Woodland Hills, California.
