Mahasweta Devi was an Indian writer, social activist, and recipient of the Jnanpith Award, the highest literary honor in India. She was born in 1926 in Dacca, Bengal Presidency, British India. She was the daughter of Manish Ghatak, a renowned Bengali poet and playwright. Mahasweta Devi was educated at the University of Calcutta and the University of Dacca. She began her career as a lecturer in English at the University of Dacca in 1950. She later worked as a journalist and editor for various newspapers and magazines. Mahasweta Devi wrote over 100 novels, short stories, and plays. Her works focused on the struggles of the marginalized and oppressed in Indian society. She was a vocal advocate for the rights of tribal people and women. In 1996, Mahasweta Devi was awarded the Jnanpith Award, the highest literary honor in India. She was also awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian honor, in 2006. Mahasweta Devi passed away in 2016 at the age of 90.
