Lloyd Alexander was an American author of more than forty books, mostly fantasy novels for children and young adults. He is best known for The Chronicles of Prydain, a series of five high fantasy novels set in the mythical land of Prydain. Alexander was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Drexel Hill. He served in the United States Army during World War II, and afterwards attended the University of Paris and the Sorbonne. He worked as a journalist, editor, and teacher before becoming a full-time writer. Alexander wrote many books for children and young adults, including the Newbery Medal-winning The High King, the last book in The Chronicles of Prydain. He also wrote several books for adults, including Westmark, The Iron Ring, and The Remarkable Journey of Prince Jen. Alexander was the recipient of numerous awards, including the Newbery Medal, the National Book Award, the Margaret A. Edwards Award, and the Regina Medal. He was also a member of the National Council of Teachers of English and the Authors Guild. He died in 2007 at the age of 83.
