Larry Blackmon is an American vocalist and musician best known as the lead singer and frontman of the funk and dance-rock band Cameo. He is also the creator of the group's signature look, the "Cameo Afro". Blackmon was born in New York City on May 24, 1956. He attended the High School of Music and Art in Manhattan and later studied music at the University of Miami. Blackmon began his career as a session musician, playing drums on albums by the likes of Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, and Herbie Hancock. He then joined Cameo in 1975, and the group released their debut album, Cardiac Arrest, in 1977. Throughout the 1980s, Cameo released a string of successful albums, including Word Up! (1986), which featured the hit single of the same name. Blackmon also wrote and produced songs for other artists, including the Gap Band and the Isley Brothers. In the 1990s, Blackmon began to focus more on producing and songwriting, and he has since worked with a variety of artists, including Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, and Mary J. Blige.
