Lachlan Mackinnon is a British poet and author. He was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, in 1956. He studied English Literature at the University of Aberdeen and then went on to pursue a career in writing. He has published several collections of poetry, including The Book of the Dead (1985), The Last of the Wild (1989), and The Sea of Silence (1995). He has also written several novels, including The Last of the Wild (1989), The Sea of Silence (1995), and The Darkest Hour (1998). Mackinnon has won several awards for his work, including the Scottish Arts Council Book Award in 1989 and the Saltire Society Scottish Book of the Year Award in 1995. He has also been shortlisted for the Whitbread Poetry Award and the Forward Poetry Prize. Mackinnon currently lives in Edinburgh, Scotland, with his wife and two children. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and a member of the Scottish Poetry Library.

In 2010 he published Small Hours with Faber. This includes "The Book of Emma", a long poem addressed to a dead friend and written largely in prose. The volume was short-listed for the Forward Prize in 2010. He also contributed to the Bush Theatre's 2011 project Sixty Six Books for which he wrote a piece based upon a book of the King James Bible He received a Cholmondeley Award in 2011.

Lachlan Mackinnon (born 1956) is a contemporary Scottish poet, critic and literary journalist. He was born in Aberdeen and educated at Charterhouse and Christ Church, Oxford. He took early retirement from his job as a teacher of English at Winchester College in 2011 and moved to Ely with his wife, the poet Wendy Cope.
