Konrad Adenauer was a German statesman who served as the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1949 to 1963. He was a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and is widely regarded as the founding father of the modern German state. Adenauer was born in 1876 in Cologne, Germany. He studied law at the University of Freiburg and later worked as a lawyer in Cologne. In 1906, he was elected to the Prussian Parliament and in 1917, he was elected to the Weimar National Assembly. Adenauer was a strong supporter of the Weimar Republic and was a key figure in the negotiations that led to the Treaty of Versailles. He was also a strong advocate of the League of Nations and was a member of the German delegation to the League's first assembly in 1920. Adenauer was a vocal opponent of the Nazi regime and was arrested and imprisoned several times during the 1930s and 1940s. After the war, he was instrumental in the formation of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and was elected as its first chairman in 1945. In 1949, Adenauer was elected as the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. During his tenure, he oversaw the rebuilding of Germany and the establishment of the European Coal and Steel Community, the precursor to the European Union. He also played a key role in the development of the West German economy and the integration of West Germany into the international community. Adenauer retired from politics in 1963 and died in 1967. He is remembered as one of the most influential figures in modern German history.
