Kevin Brownlow is an English film historian, archivist, documentary maker, television director, and Academy Award-winning film editor. He is best known for his work on the restoration of silent films, and for his television documentaries on the history of cinema. Brownlow was born in Crowborough, Sussex, England, and educated at Tonbridge School. He began his career as a film editor in the 1950s, working on documentaries and feature films. He won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for his work on the 1968 film Winstanley. In the 1970s, Brownlow began to focus on the restoration of silent films, and in the 1980s he began to produce and direct television documentaries on the history of cinema. His documentaries include Hollywood (1980), Unknown Chaplin (1983), Buster Keaton: A Hard Act to Follow (1987), and David Lean (1991). Brownlow has written several books on the history of cinema, including The Parade's Gone By (1968), The War, the West, and the Wilderness (1979), and Behind the Mask of Innocence (1990). He has also written and directed several feature films, including It Happened Here (1966), Winstanley (1975), and Agony and the Ecstasy of Phil Spector (2007). Brownlow has received numerous awards for his work, including the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Fellowship in 2003, the International Documentary Association's Career Achievement Award in 2004, and the Academy Honorary Award in 2010.
