Juan Antonio Samaranch was a Spanish sports administrator who served as the seventh President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from 1980 to 2001. He was born in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, on 17 July 1920. Samaranch was a member of the Spanish Olympic Committee from 1966 to 1970 and was elected to the IOC in 1966. He was appointed as the President of the IOC in 1980 and served in that role until 2001. During his tenure, he was credited with modernizing the Olympic Games and increasing the number of participating countries. He also helped to bring the Olympic Games to China in 2008. Samaranch was awarded the Olympic Order in Gold in 1981 and was made a Grand Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic in 1992. He was also awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for Sports in 2000. He died on 21 April 2010 in Barcelona, Spain.
