Joseph Lyons was an Australian politician who served as the tenth Prime Minister of Australia from 1932 to 1939. He was born on 15 September 1879 in Stanley, Tasmania, Australia. He was the son of Michael Lyons, a farmer, and his wife, Ellen, née O'Brien. Lyons was educated at Stanley State School and at the age of 15, he left school to work as a clerk in a local store. He later worked as a journalist for the Hobart Mercury and the Launceston Examiner. In 1909, Lyons was elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly as a member of the Australian Labor Party. He served as Premier of Tasmania from 1923 to 1928 and as Treasurer of Australia from 1929 to 1931. In 1932, Lyons became the tenth Prime Minister of Australia and led the United Australia Party to victory in the federal election. He served as Prime Minister until 1939, when he resigned due to ill health. Lyons died on 7 April 1939 in Sydney, Australia. He was 59 years old.
