In 1979 was comissioned by the Metropolitan Opera to write a new opera for the company, the first Met comission in almost fifteen years. After twelve years of work composing, Corigliano's new opera, "The Ghosts of Versailles," received its world premiere at the Metropolitan Opera, in December 1991, with James Levine conducting.
