John C. Stennis was an American politician who served as a United States Senator from Mississippi from 1947 to 1989. He was a member of the Democratic Party and was the longest-serving senator in Mississippi history. Stennis was born in Kemper County, Mississippi, on August 3, 1901. He attended public schools in DeKalb, Mississippi, and graduated from Mississippi State University in 1923. He then attended the University of Virginia Law School, graduating in 1925. Stennis began his political career in 1926, when he was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives. He served in the House until 1947, when he was elected to the United States Senate. He served in the Senate until 1989, when he retired due to ill health. During his time in the Senate, Stennis was a strong advocate for civil rights and was a leader in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He was also a strong supporter of the Vietnam War and was a leader in the passage of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. Stennis died on April 23, 1995, at the age of 93. He was buried in DeKalb, Mississippi.
