John Baxter was an Australian writer and journalist who was born on 31 December, 1896 in Australia. He was best known for his works on Australian literature, including his book, The Australian Novel, which was published in 1945. Baxter was educated at the University of Melbourne, where he studied English and philosophy. After graduating, he worked as a journalist for the Melbourne Herald and the Melbourne Argus. He also wrote for the Sydney Morning Herald and the Melbourne Age. Baxter was a prolific writer, publishing over 20 books during his lifetime. His works included novels, short stories, plays, and non-fiction works. He was also a noted critic of Australian literature, and his book, The Australian Novel, was widely acclaimed. Baxter was married twice, first to Mary Elizabeth (Liz) Baxter, and then to Margaret (Peggy) Baxter. He had two children, a son and a daughter. Baxter died on 28 August, 1975 in Melbourne, Australia. He was 78 years old.
