John Ashbery is an American poet, essayist, and art critic. He is widely considered one of the most important and influential poets of the 20th century. He has won numerous awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, the National Book Award, and the National Book Critics Circle Award. Ashbery was born in Rochester, New York, and attended Harvard University, where he studied English and French literature. After graduating, he worked as a freelance writer and editor for various publications, including Art News and The New York Times. In 1976, Ashbery published his first collection of poetry, Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, the National Book Award, and the National Book Critics Circle Award. Since then, he has published numerous collections of poetry, including Houseboat Days (1977), A Wave (1984), April Galleons (1987), Flow Chart (1991), and Can You Hear, Bird (2000). Ashbery has also written several books of essays and criticism, including Other Traditions (2000) and And the Stars Were Shining (1994). He has also edited several anthologies of poetry, including The Best American Poetry (1988) and The Best of the Best American Poetry (1999). In addition to his writing, Ashbery has taught at numerous universities, including Bard College, Columbia University, and the University of Iowa.
