Joan Rivers was an American comedian, actress, writer, producer, and television host. She was best known for her stand-up comedy, her brash manner, and her loud, raspy voice. She was also known for her appearances on the red carpet, interviewing celebrities on the red carpet at awards shows and other events. Rivers began her career as a stand-up comedian in the late 1950s. She made appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and The Ed Sullivan Show. She also wrote several books, including her autobiography, Enter Talking. Rivers was the first woman to host a late-night talk show, The Late Show with Joan Rivers, which ran from 1986 to 1988. She also hosted the daytime talk show, The Joan Rivers Show, from 1989 to 1993. Rivers was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special for her HBO special, Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work. She was also nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk Show Host for The Joan Rivers Show. Rivers was married to Edgar Rosenberg from 1965 until his death in 1987. She had one daughter, Melissa Rivers. Rivers died on September 4, 2014, at the age of 81.
